Using our home battery for six months has changed the way I think about electricity. Before installing a 10-kWh solar energy storage unit, I sent most of my afternoon solar production straight back to the grid. By dinner time, the panels were quiet and we were buying power during the most expensive part of the day.

Now the battery charges from the rooftop system between late morning and mid-afternoon. I set it to reserve about 25% for outages, then it runs the fridge, lights, router, and sometimes the dishwasher during peak hours. That schedule has made the clearest difference on my bill. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, and our evening rate is nearly double the overnight rate. In the first full month, our bill fell from about $186 to $119, even though we had several cloudy days. Since then, the savings have usually landed between $50 and $70 monthly. It feels especially good to use stored solar instead of buying utility electricity at dinner time.

The only hiccup came during a hot week when the battery stopped discharging at 6:30 p.m. The app showed a low-temperature warning, which seemed odd because the garage was warm. I power-cycled the inverter as the manual suggested, but the warning returned. Customer support checked the logs remotely and found an airflow issue caused by a dusty filter near the inverter. After I cleaned it and left more space around the equipment, the system recovered that evening.

That small problem taught me not to treat a home battery as completely “set and forget” equipment. It needs occasional app checks and basic housekeeping. Overall, the battery has given me a more predictable energy routine: solar power in the day, stored energy after sunset, and a pure sense that our rooftop investment is doing useful work every day.
