I installed my home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My setup is a 6 kW rooftop solar array paired with a 10 kWh lipo 4 battery, installed in the garage beside the inverter. I was nervous about the process, but the installer finished in one day and connected the battery to my existing solar system without replacing the panels.

The difference became obvious during the first full month. Before the battery, my solar panels exported power around lunchtime, when my family was usually out or using very little electricity. Then we bought energy back from the grid between 5 and 9 p.m., when rates were highest. Now the battery stores most of that midday surplus and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater after sunset. On clear days, it carries us almost to bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $165 to $78, although seasonal weather still makes a difference.

I also like being able to check the battery state of charge from the monitoring app. It is satisfying to see solar production filling the battery instead of watching electricity disappear into the grid at a low credit rate. I usually keep a 20% backup reserve, so we have some protection during an outage.

The only annoying moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve early each evening, and I assumed something was wrong. After checking the app, I realized the electric water heater had been running longer than usual because guests were staying with us. I adjusted its schedule and reduced the reserve to 15%, and performance went back to normal.

For me, the biggest benefit is not total energy independence. It is shifting my own solar power into the hours when my household actually needs it. The battery storage system has made our solar investment feel much more practical, and the quieter, lower evening bills are easy to appreciate.
