Running our solar battery through the first full summer changed the way I use electricity at home. Before adding storage, I sent most of my midday solar power back to the grid and then bought it back during the expensive evening period. Now my projecta battery charges while the panels are producing, and we run from stored energy after dinner.

The biggest difference is between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I used to switch off the air conditioner, delay cooking, and watch the meter climb whenever the family was home. These days, the battery usually covers the induction cooktop, refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and air conditioner through that peak window. On a typical sunny day, my evening grid consumption has fallen from roughly 8 kWh to under 2 kWh. My bills are not zero, but the monthly saving has been noticeable—around $70 to $100 compared with the same months last year, depending on weather and rates.

I also like having a simple reserve for outages. During one brief evening blackout, the battery kept the refrigerator, internet router, and a few lights running. I had to manually reduce the load because the kettle and microwave together were too much, but that was a useful reminder that backup power is not the same as unlimited power.

The only minor frustration was getting the battery schedule right. My first settings allowed it to discharge before the highest tariff started, wasting some of its advantage. After changing the time-of-use controls and setting a small backup reserve, the solar storage system behaved much better. I now check the app every few days, mostly to compare solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid imports.

For me, the battery has been less about energy independence and more about using my own solar power at the right time.
