I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate (li fe po4) battery last spring, mainly because our electricity bill jumped during evening peak hours. My rooftop solar panels usually produced more power than we used at lunchtime, but that surplus disappeared back into the grid for a fairly small credit. The battery changed that pattern immediately.
After the installer finished the wiring and app setup, I set the system to charge from solar and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On a normal sunny day, it reaches 100 percent before dinner. Then it runs our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the washing machine. I still pull from the grid when we cook with the electric oven, but the battery handles most of the expensive period.
The practical difference showed up on my first full bill. Our peak usage fell from roughly 210 kWh to 68 kWh, and the bill dropped by about $53. That is not a spectacular promise from a calculator; it was money I could actually see missing from the utility statement. Savings vary with cloudy weather and air conditioning, but I now average around $40 to $60 less each month in summer.
I did have one small scare. The battery stopped discharging one evening, even though the app showed a healthy charge level. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 50% during a firmware update. Lowering it to 20% restored normal operation, and support confirmed nothing was wrong with the LiFePO4 battery.
That little incident also taught me to check settings before assuming hardware failure. I appreciate having backup power during short outages, although I keep expectations realistic: this is not whole-home independence. Still, using stored solar energy instead of buying peak electricity has made the battery feel worthwhile every month since.
