Ever since I installed a deye lithium battery beside my inverter, evenings have felt noticeably less expensive. Before the battery, our solar panels sent most of their midday production straight to the grid, while we bought power back after dinner at the peak rate. Now the battery charges from excess solar during the afternoon and runs our refrigerator, lights, router, and heat pump after sunset.
The change is easiest to see on the utility bill. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $65, although the exact savings vary with cloudy weather and how often we cook or run laundry, but the battery has cut our expensive evening imports dramatically. In winter, when the heat pump works harder, I still usually save about $70-$90/month.
What surprised me most was how quiet the system is. I expected a noticeable hum from the inverter or battery cabinet, but standing a few feet away, I hear only a faint click when charging changes direction. The monitoring app also makes the state of charge easy to understand. At breakfast, I can glance at it and see whether we made it through the night without grid power.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a storm. The battery showed an error and stopped discharging, so I checked the cable connections and restarted the inverter through the app. It turned out that a brief voltage dip had triggered protection, not a hardware failure. After ten minutes, the battery returned to normal, and our essential loads stayed powered throughout. That incident made me appreciate the safety settings rather than worry about them.
I have since adjusted the backup reserve to 25%, leaving enough capacity for outages while still using daily solar energy. For my household, this setup is less about energy independence than making ordinary evenings cheaper and more predictable.
