Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Evenings at our house used to be the expensive part of the day. My rooftop solar made plenty of power at lunchtime, but by dinner the panels were quiet and the utility meter was racing through peak rates. I added a 10-kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, and that changed our routine.
I set it to charge from surplus solar and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On a normal sunny day, it covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, well pump, and most of our evening cooking. Our peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 11 kWh a day to 2 or 3. The first full month, my bill fell by about $74, even though the utility raised its rates.
While reading the battery monitor, I noticed the state of charge sometimes jumped from 38% to 46% after only a few minutes. I initially thought the solar charge controller was faulty. The culprit was simply the battery monitor’s settings: I had entered the wrong “peukert exponent lifepo4” value copied from an old lead-acid setup. Once I corrected the shunt monitor for lithium iron phosphate chemistry and recalibrated full and empty points, the readings became much steadier. Good lesson: even a plug-and-play-looking system needs careful configuration.
The practical difference is biggest during cloudy evenings. On those days, I reserve 30% capacity instead of draining the battery completely. That leaves enough backup for the freezer and internet if the grid goes down, while still shaving expensive hours. I also installed an energy monitor beside the breaker panel, which helps me compare solar production, battery discharge, and load without guessing.
After six months, I have saved around $380, and the battery still reaches its advertised usable capacity. I do not expect miracles in winter, but the quieter meter and lower bills make the system feel worthwhile.
