Every evening, I check the solar battery monitor before bed. Last summer, I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) storage battery after watching my electricity bills climb during the hottest months. I wanted to avoid those expensive 4-to-9-p.m. utility rates.
The setup was surprisingly straightforward. My installer mounted the inverter and placed the battery in a ventilated utility room, while keeping the grid connection intact. The monitoring app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption.
What I notice most is the peak-hour shift. During sunny days, my panels charge the battery by early afternoon. At 4:00, the battery starts running the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and home office equipment instead of pulling from the grid. My evening usage is fairly modest, but that change still cut my monthly bill from roughly $185 to $94 in the first full month. On cloudier weeks, savings are smaller, usually around $60 to $70, but I still appreciate the backup reserve when the grid blinks.
My one minor troubleshooting moment came after a firmware update. The app suddenly reported the battery was at 100%, even though the inverter was still charging. I turned off updates, restarted the gateway, and checked the battery disconnect. After about ten minutes, the readings matched again. It was not dramatic, but it reminded me that solar storage is electrical equipment, not a completely hands-off appliance.
After six months, I have had no noticeable capacity loss. I usually finish the night around 35% state of charge, so there is plenty left for an outage. The biggest practical win is simply seeing less grid power on my bill without changing our routines. For me, that quiet, predictable peak shaving matters more than flashy features.
