Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but after dinner the meter seemed to spin fastest. The battery has made that gap much less painful.
The installation itself was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter and battery in my garage, connected the solar panels, and added the monitoring app. I chose a lithium battery prismatic pack because I wanted a compact, modular battery with a long cycle life, rather than filling the wall with several small units. It took one day, and the only real inconvenience was losing power for about an hour while the electrician tested the backup circuit.
I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100 percent by midafternoon. Then it runs the refrigerator, lights, router, and sometimes the induction cooker through dinner. Before storage, my utility bill averaged around $180 in summer. It now lands closer to $115, although weather and air-conditioning use still make a big difference. The best savings come from avoiding peak rates, not from making the house completely independent.
One evening the app showed the battery at 20 percent even though the sun had been strong. I found that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80 percent after a firmware update. Lowering that reserve to 20 percent fixed the issue immediately. Since then, I check the app once a week, but otherwise the solar battery has been refreshingly boring. For me, reliable peak-hour savings matter more than impressive specifications, and this energy storage system has delivered exactly that. I would happily make the same choice again when electricity prices rise.
