Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
After installing a 10-kWh lithium-ion solar battery in our garage last spring, I expected the biggest benefit to be backup electricity for home during outages. Instead, the surprise has been how much calmer our evening routine feels when the sun goes down.
Our house has rooftop solar, but before the battery we still bought expensive grid power after dinner. The battery now charges from excess midday solar and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. I check the monitoring app occasionally, mostly because I enjoy seeing the house switch from “solar” to “battery” instead of “grid.”
The most noticeable savings show up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility’s peak rate applies. On clear days, the battery is usually around 80% full at sunset, and it carries us until bedtime. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and how often we run the clothes dryer. That is not a dramatic number by itself, but it adds up and makes the solar battery feel useful every day.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected and stopped discharging at 30%. I initially thought the inverter had failed, but the app showed that backup reserve mode was working exactly as configured. I lowered the reserve to 20% for normal days, while keeping it higher before storms or wildfire alerts. That simple adjustment restored more evening savings without making me nervous about emergencies.
During one brief outage, the transition was quick enough that our router stayed online and the lights flickered only once. I did not test every appliance, though; I avoid running the oven and washing machine together on battery power.
Overall, it made home life cheaper, quieter, and better prepared.
