I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery storage system beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during our evening peak hours. The solar panels already covered most daytime use, but after sunset we were still pulling power from the grid when rates were highest.
Setup was easier than expected. The installer mounted the inverter and battery beside my existing solar equipment, connected everything, and explained the monitoring app. We only had to clear space around the battery, and installation took one day.
The biggest change is our evening routine. The battery charges from surplus solar at midday, then powers the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, washing machine, and heat pump after sunset. Our summer bill fell from about $185 to $112 monthly, saving roughly $73 without changing our habits. That is better than the installer’s estimate.
I also noticed better backup protection than I expected. During a storm, the grid went down for nearly three hours. The lights flickered once, the inverter switched, and everything essential kept running. I had originally worried that the battery would drain quickly, but the app showed 68 percent remaining afterward. I now keep the reserve setting at 30 percent, rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour of savings.
My only annoyance has been winter weather. Cloudy days leave less solar energy for charging, so the battery sometimes reaches evening only half full. I adjusted the charge schedule to use cheaper overnight grid power when necessary, and that solved most of it.
