Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My rooftop solar system is only 6.6 kW, so on sunny days it fills the battery by about 3 p.m. The battery then runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater after dinner.
The change was most noticeable on my first full utility bill. Before storage, our household used roughly 18 kWh from the grid between 4 and 9 p.m. each weeknight. After the installation, that figure dropped to almost zero on clear days. Our monthly bill fell from around $185 to $92, although weather and utility rates obviously make the savings different from month to month. I like seeing the energy-monitoring app show solar charging in the afternoon and discharging during the peak-rate window. It makes the savings feel real rather than theoretical.
Installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and finished in one day. I did have one small scare during the first week: the battery stopped discharging overnight. The app showed a communication warning, but cycling the gateway and tightening the Ethernet connection fixed it. Customer support confirmed that no cells or battery management system had failed.
During a two-hour outage in July, the backup battery kept the refrigerator, modem, a few lights, and my office running without any noticeable interruption. I did not try to power the air conditioner, which would have drained the battery quickly.
I have since learned to think beyond headlines about lithium iron phosphate stocks and solar battery prices. For me, the useful question is whether the battery storage system reduces peak-hour purchases reliably. So far, it has, and the quieter, more predictable power routine is the benefit I appreciate most in our home.
