Early last summer, I installed a deye 5 kw hybrid inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery in my garage. I had been frustrated watching our electricity bill jump whenever the air conditioner ran after dinner, so my main goal was shifting evening usage away from expensive grid power.

Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician finished the wiring in one day, and the app started showing solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption almost immediately. Placement took teamwork.

The biggest difference appears between 4pm and 9pm. Before storage, I would come home to a warm house, turn on the heat pump, cook dinner, and watch the meter pull electricity from the grid at the highest rate. Now the battery charges from rooftop solar during the afternoon and covers most of that period. On ordinary sunny days, I use roughly 70% less grid electricity during peak hours. My monthly bill fell from about $185 to $95, although winter results are definitely less impressive.

I did have one small troubleshooting scare. One morning the app showed the battery at 0% even though the previous evening had been sunny. I checked the breakers and found the battery isolator had tripped, probably after a brief grid flicker. I reset it, and the system resumed normally without losing settings. Since then, I have kept an eye on the event log, but it has not happened again.

For me, the battery is most valuable because it quietly reduces grid dependence rather than making the house fully off-grid. I still keep a small reserve for outages, and I avoid running heavy appliances together after sunset. The setup has made solar power feel usable beyond daylight hours, and seeing a lower bill every month makes the investment feel practical, not just environmentally satisfying.
