Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Since installing a home solar battery system last spring, I have paid much closer attention to when electricity costs me money. My setup is fairly modest: twelve rooftop panels, a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and a hybrid inverter. I chose storage mainly to avoid buying power during our utility’s expensive evening peak, not because I wanted to be completely off-grid.
On sunny days, my panels charge the battery by early afternoon. The inverter then holds that energy until around 4:00, when our rates jump. By dinner time, the battery is running the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the washing machine. I leave the air conditioner on the grid during especially hot weather, because that appliance can drain the battery surprisingly fast.
The most noticeable change is my peak-hour bill. Before storage, our monthly summer electricity bill often reached about $210. After adding the solar battery, it has usually landed between $125 and $145, depending on cloudy days and how much we cook. That is roughly $70–$85 saved each month, not counting the separate value of backup power during outages. I can see the battery discharge on the monitoring app, which makes the savings feel real rather than like an estimate on a sales sheet.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment in July. The battery stopped charging even though the panels were producing. The app showed a communication warning, so I checked the inverter cabinet and found the network cable had loosened slightly. I reseated it, restarted the monitoring gateway, and charging resumed within a few minutes. I appreciated that the problem was simple, though I still saved the installer’s support number afterward.
I have also searched for used lithium batterys while considering expansion, but I decided to wait. My current battery covers our highest-cost hours well.
