I installed a lithium battery 10kw home storage system last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during our utility’s expensive evening hours. Before that, my rooftop solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we were still pulling power from the grid after dinner. That felt especially wasteful in summer, when the air conditioner ran until bedtime.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the solar battery in our garage, beside the inverter, and added a backup gateway. I had to clear a section of shelving, but the wiring was finished in one day. The app showed battery state of charge, solar production, household load, and grid import clearly, which made the system easy to understand without constantly checking the equipment.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. My battery charges from excess solar during the day, then discharges after sunset. On a typical sunny day, the house runs almost entirely on stored energy through dinner, laundry, and the air conditioner. The battery reserve usually reaches about 25 percent by morning, so I still have a cushion for an outage.
My monthly electricity bill used to average around $180 in the warmer months. Since adding this energy storage, it has generally landed between $70 and $95, depending on cloudy weather and how often we run cooling. That is roughly $85 saved most months, although I do not pretend the battery pays for itself overnight. The utility still charges connection fees, and winter solar generation is noticeably lower.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app reported that the battery was offline, even though the house had power. I restarted the communications hub, waited about ten minutes, and everything came back. Since then, the alert history has stayed clear.
