Solution Solar Inverter
After six months of living with a home solar battery, I finally stopped watching the electricity meter every evening. My main goal was simple: use less grid power during expensive peak hours, not become an energy expert.
The 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery was installed beside my inverter in the garage. The installer finished in one afternoon, and the app was surprisingly easy to understand. I set it to charge from my rooftop solar during the day and discharge automatically between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m., when our utility charges the highest rates.
That schedule has made the biggest difference to my monthly bill. Before storage, our evening cooking, laundry, and air conditioning regularly pushed us into the top rate tier. Now the battery usually carries those loads until bedtime. On sunny days, it reaches 100% by early afternoon, and I often finish the night with 20% remaining. My bills have dropped by roughly 35%, from about $180 to $117 per month, although winter savings are smaller.
My only frustrating moment came during a smoky week when wildfire haze reduced solar production. The battery stayed at 42% and would not discharge, even though the app showed normal operation. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and called support. They explained that my backup reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 40% during a software update. Lowering it to 20% fixed the behavior immediately. I appreciated that the support technician explained the setting instead of blaming the weather.
I like the quiet routine of this system. It makes a faint hum, but nothing like the old generator I once considered. I can run the dishwasher after dinner without thinking about peak pricing, and during outages it keeps the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running. It gives us nightly massage, smoothing spikes.
