Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My rooftop solar panels usually finish charging it by midafternoon, and the battery then carries the house through dinner, laundry, and most of the night.
The difference showed up on the first full billing cycle. Before adding storage, our utility bill averaged about $185 because we used the oven, dishwasher, heat pump, and water heater after sunset. After programming the battery to discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., the bill fell to $92. It is not a perfect month-to-month comparison, but even allowing for milder weather, the peak-hour savings have been obvious. I am using far less grid power when rates are highest, which is exactly what I wanted from solar energy storage.
I also like having a reserve during outages. We had a short neighborhood blackout during a storm, and the battery automatically kept the refrigerator, internet router, a few lights, and my office running. I did not try to power the whole house, so expectations matter. The air conditioner stayed off, and I manually avoided running large appliances.
One small annoyance was the battery stopping at 95 percent instead of reaching its normal full charge. The monitoring app showed a temperature warning, even though the garage did not feel especially hot. I switched on the battery’s cooling fan setting, cleared the warning, and it returned to normal the next day. Customer support also confirmed that the system was protecting itself rather than losing capacity.
I had considered lithium batteries for off grid systems, but I am still connected to the utility and chose a grid-tied battery with backup capability. For my home, the biggest benefit is not total energy independence. It is using my own solar power later in the day and seeing that reduction on every bill. The battery has quietly become the most useful part of my solar setup.
