Solution Solar Battery
Last summer, I added a 10 kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system after finding a good clearance sale from a local installer. My main goal was simple: use more of my own solar power at night instead of sending it back to the grid for a low export rate.
The installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The battery went in beside my inverter, and the electrician finished the wiring and commissioning in most of a day. I spent the first week watching the monitoring app far too often, checking charge levels, solar production, and household consumption. It was satisfying to see the battery charging around lunchtime and then covering the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and evening cooking after sunset.
The biggest practical difference shows up during peak-hour pricing. Before the battery, our electric meter climbed quickly between dinner and bedtime. Now, the battery usually supplies that period, unless we have several cloudy days in a row. My evening grid usage has dropped noticeably, and my monthly bill is typically $45–$70 lower than it was before, depending on the weather and how much air conditioning we use. I still buy some electricity overnight in winter, but the solar battery has reduced those expensive imports.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the settings and discovered a backup reserve had been set higher than I realized. Lowering that reserve restored normal operation, and I appreciated being able to solve it without a service call.
After several months, I’m happy with the setup. It has not eliminated my power bill, but the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and smart energy management feels much more useful than solar alone. For me, the real value is predictable evening power and less dependence on peak grid rates.
