8 months ago, I installed a 10 kWh lithium solar battery alongside my rooftop panels, and the biggest change has been how much less I think about peak-hour electricity prices. Before the battery, my house pulled heavily from the grid between 5 and 9 p.m., exactly when cooking, laundry, and the heat pump were all running. Now the inverter saves most of the midday solar production and releases it after sunset.
The first evening I watched the system discharge, I was strangely excited. My monitoring app showed the battery covering nearly everything except a short microwave surge. On a typical sunny day, I now import only 1–2 kWh instead of 8–10 kWh. That has lowered my evening usage enough to save roughly $70 to $95 a month, depending on the season and electricity rates. The savings are not dramatic every day, but they add up, especially during expensive time-of-use periods.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at about 42% even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially thought the solar battery was faulty, but the installer explained that the backup reserve had been set too high. We changed the reserve from 40% to 20%, and it immediately began using more capacity during normal evenings. I kept the higher reserve during storm season because I like having emergency power available.
I have also spent too much time reading about battery cells, including searches for an “18650 battery holder.” That is more relevant to small DIY battery projects than my professionally installed home storage system, but it helped me understand cell arrangement and why a proper battery management system matters.
After living with the system, my favorite feature is not watching the battery percentage. It is running the dishwasher at night without feeling like every appliance is adding to my bill. The battery quietly does its job, and that practical convenience has made the investment feel worthwhile.
