lishen cell

I installed a 10-kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to stop sending cheap midday solar back to the grid and buying it back during expensive evening hours. My setup uses rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and a battery built around lishen cell technology. I chose this capacity because our normal evening use is fairly modest: refrigerator, dishwasher, lights, Wi-Fi, and occasionally the heat pump.

The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility’s peak rate applies. Before adding battery storage, I would come home, turn on the oven, and watch the electricity meter move quickly in the wrong direction. Now the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon, then discharges through dinner and the first part of the evening. On sunny days, that has reduced our monthly bill by roughly 25 to 35 percent compared with the same months last year. The exact savings vary with weather, but shifting solar power into peak hours has been more useful than simply exporting every extra kilowatt-hour.

I did have one mildly frustrating troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its programmed 20 percent reserve and stayed at 42 percent overnight. The monitoring app showed no obvious fault, so I checked the inverter settings, restarted the communications gateway, and waited for the installer to confirm the update had changed the backup reserve setting. Once I reset it, normal operation returned. I now check the state of charge and charge schedule every few days, especially before a storm.

I do not think home energy storage makes electricity free, and the upfront cost is still significant. However, the battery has made our solar system much more practical. We use more of our own generated power, rely less on peak-rate electricity, and have a reassuring amount of backup power when the grid goes down.
