I installed my solar battery system last summer, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop panels produce plenty from late morning through the afternoon, but our household usually needs the most power after dinner, when the solar production has already dropped. Before adding storage, I was sending surplus energy to the grid during the day and then paying much more to get it back at night.

The battery is a LiFePO4 unit connected to a hybrid inverter, with the system set to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On a typical sunny day, it covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the washing machine. I also have a small backup setup using a lifepo4 12v 18ah battery for networking equipment during short outages. It is not large enough to run the whole house, but it keeps my router and modem alive long enough that I barely notice a brief power cut.

The biggest practical difference has been my evening electricity bill. My utility’s peak rate is almost twice the daytime rate, and shifting those five hours to stored solar reduced my monthly bill by roughly 25 to 35 percent, depending on the weather. I noticed the savings immediately, especially during hot weeks when the air conditioner runs after sunset.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though it showed a healthy charge level. After checking the inverter app, I found that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 40 percent instead of 15 percent after a firmware update. Lowering the reserve fixed it within minutes. Since then, I check the settings after every software update.

The system has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made solar power much more useful. I now use more of my own energy, rely less on peak-grid electricity, and feel better prepared for short outages.
