2 years ago, I installed a small solar battery system after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. My setup uses rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and one 12v 230ah battery bank connected for home energy storage. I was not expecting miracles, but I wanted to use more of my own solar power after sunset instead of sending most of it back to the grid.
The biggest difference showed up during peak hours. Before adding the battery, my family usually cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and watched television when electricity rates were highest. Now the battery stores excess solar power during the afternoon and supplies those evening loads. On a typical sunny day, I save roughly $2 to $4 in peak-hour charges. That works out to around $45 to $70 per month, depending on the season and our usage. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but seeing the meter stay quiet while the house is running feels very satisfying.
One minor issue came up during the first month. The battery monitor showed the state of charge dropping faster than expected after sunset. I eventually discovered that the garage freezer and a small space heater had been left on the same backed-up circuit. Once I moved the heater off that circuit and adjusted the inverter’s low-voltage cutoff, the battery performance became much more predictable.
I also learned that battery capacity on paper is not the same as usable capacity. I avoid completely draining the battery because I want better cycle life, and I check the charge controller several times a week. On cloudy days, solar charging is limited, so I still buy some grid electricity.
Overall, this solar battery has made my energy use easier to manage. The savings matter, but the practical benefit is having stored power available when solar production stops.
