I installed a lifpo4 48v 100ah battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar system already produced more power than we used at lunchtime, but after dinner the house pulled everything from the grid. The battery has changed that daily pattern more than I expected.
On a normal sunny day, the solar inverter charges the battery from about 10 a.m. until early afternoon. I set it to keep a small reserve, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility rates are highest. That timing matters. Our air conditioner, induction stove, and water heater often overlap in the evening, and the battery handles most of that load. Before storage, our summer bill was usually around $180. During the first comparable month with the battery, it dropped to $96. Weather and usage were not identical, so I would not claim the entire difference came from storage, but the peak-hour savings are obvious on the monitoring app.
The most useful surprise has been how quiet and boring the system is. I hear the inverter fan briefly on very hot afternoons, but the battery itself is silent. The state-of-charge display is easy to understand, and I can see solar production, home consumption, and grid import in real time. I usually check it with my morning coffee rather than obsessing over every fluctuation.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight. I restarted the inverter, checked the operating schedule, and discovered the update had reset the reserve setting to 100 percent. Lowering it back to 20 percent fixed the problem immediately. Since then, the solar battery has reliably covered our evening peak, reduced grid dependence, and made our rooftop solar investment feel much more practical. It has not eliminated every bill, but it has made the expensive hours less painful.
