2 summers ago, I added a 10-kWh NMC lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. During the day, the panels usually produce more than we use, so the battery charges instead of sending everything back to the grid. At 4 p.m., I set it to discharge through the expensive window, and that one change has made the biggest difference to my bills.
Before installing storage, my summer bills often crossed $180. After the first full month, the bill was $112, despite running the air conditioner most afternoons. In milder months, I have seen savings of roughly $40-$60. I still import power overnight, but much less of it comes during peak pricing. The battery also gives me a little peace of mind during outages; it switches over quickly enough to keep the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running.
The setup was straightforward, although I had one charging issue. The installer left the charge limit too low, so the battery stopped at 70% on cloudy days. I initially blamed the solar inverter, then found the setting in the monitoring app. I use a 72v 12a nmc lithium battery charger for occasional bench charging and testing, following its instructions. After adjusting the reserve and charge limits, the system behaved normally.
What I appreciate most is that storage has changed how I use electricity. I run the dishwasher and laundry after lunch, let the battery cover dinner cooking, and avoid unnecessary grid use after sunset. The app shows solar production, battery state of charge, and daily savings clearly, so I can spot unusual behavior without guessing. It is not a magic bill eliminator; battery capacity, inverter efficiency, and utility rates still matter. Still, for my home, it has been a practical upgrade that pays back for me.
