Solution Solar Inverter
After six months with my home solar battery, I finally stopped guessing how much power we were wasting. I installed a 10kWh lithium battery beside our inverter, mainly to cover evening use after the panels quit producing. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the unit, connected the battery management system, tested backup circuits, and showed me the settings. I use watchpower to check battery state, solar generation, and grid imports from my phone. That app is not beautiful, but it gives me enough information without walking into the garage.
The biggest difference appears between late afternoon and bedtime, when electricity rates are highest. Before, I would run the oven, dishwasher, and air conditioner from the grid during those hours. Now, the battery discharges automatically, and my evening grid usage has fallen by roughly 60 percent. My monthly bill dropped from around $180 in summer to about $105, though weather and utility rates still move the number around. I am not counting the financing payment, so this is not a claim that the battery has paid for itself yet. What I appreciate most is shifting solar energy into the hours when it actually helps.
We had one small scare during a storm. The inverter beeped, and the watchpower graph showed a sudden battery drop even though the house was barely using anything. I found a loose communication cable between the battery and inverter; after reseating it, the readings returned to normal within a few minutes. No service call was needed, but that moment taught me to keep connections dry, save the error codes, and not panic at every warning.
Overall, the solar battery has made our routine quieter: fewer peak-hour imports, steadier backup power, and a bill I can understand. That practical change matters to me daily.
