Keeping my solar battery system running has changed the way I use electricity at home. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery alongside a 5kv inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during the expensive evening hours. Before the installation, my biggest usage was usually between 5 and 9 p.m., when everyone was home, dinner was cooking, and the air conditioner was running.
Now the solar panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the battery supplies most of the house after sunset. On sunny days, I can get through the whole evening without drawing much from the grid. My electricity bill has fallen from roughly $210 a month to around $125, although winter savings are smaller because there is less sunlight and we use more heating. I like seeing the battery app show the stored energy being used instead of watching the meter climb during peak rates.
The only frustrating moment happened during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at about 30 percent, even though I had set the backup reserve to 15 percent. I initially thought the solar inverter or battery storage unit was faulty. After checking the app, I found that a software update had reset the reserve setting. I changed it back, restarted the system, and the battery immediately began operating normally. The installer also explained that keeping a reserve is useful during outages, so I now leave it at 20 percent.
The system is not completely hands-off. I occasionally clean dust from the panels and check the monitoring app, but there has been no serious maintenance. For me, the biggest benefit is predictable evening power. I am not trying to eliminate the grid connection; I am simply using less grid electricity when it costs the most. After several months, the solar battery has paid for itself in comfort and noticeably lower monthly bills.
