I installed my solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My roof panels already covered most daytime use, but our utility's peak rate made dinner, laundry, and air-conditioning surprisingly costly. I chose a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery paired with a Victron inverter, after comparing a few solar storage options and reading plenty of owner forums.
I ended up with a lifepo4 victron combination, and the actual installation was straightforward. The installer mounted the battery in a cool utility room, ran cable to the inverter, and configured charging around my time-of-use schedule. I was nervous about noise, but the inverter is quieter than my refrigerator. The first few days were mostly about watching the monitoring app and resisting the urge to change settings.
By 6 p.m., the battery usually had 70-85% charge, and it carried the house through the expensive period without any noticeable interruption. On a typical weekday, I see it discharge from dinner until about 10:30, then grid power takes over.
Before installation, my winter electric bills averaged about $190. Now they are closer to $118, despite similar weather and usage. That roughly $72 monthly difference is not a marketing estimate; I can see the reduced peak kWh on each bill. Summer results have been better: on the hottest days, solar charges the battery before noon, and I use that stored energy after sunset instead of paying the highest rate.
I did have one small scare. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging for an evening, even though the app showed plenty of energy. I checked breakers and cables, then restarted the inverter according to the manual. It returned to normal operation the next morning. Support confirmed a temporary communication glitch, and I have since enabled automatic updates only when the battery is idle.
