I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop panels usually finish producing by late afternoon, just as our cooking, laundry, and heating use starts climbing. Before the battery, that was the expensive part of the day.
The difference showed up on the first full month. I programmed the system to charge from solar during daylight and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Our utility’s peak rate is nearly double the overnight rate, so I expected some savings, but I was still surprised to see the bill drop by about $75 compared with the same month the previous year. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but the reduction has been consistent. On sunny days, the battery often carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and kitchen appliances through the entire evening.
I have also appreciated how quiet the battery storage system is. It sits in the garage beside the inverter and makes only a faint hum when charging hard. I initially worried that adding another power device would make the garage feel industrial, but it has been less noticeable than my old freezer.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I discovered that a software update had reset the time-of-use schedule. Restoring the schedule took about five minutes, and the system worked normally afterward.
