On most evenings, I used to watch my electricity meter climb when the sun went down. After installing a powerwall 10kwh home battery beside my inverter, that habit changed.
My rooftop solar system still powers the house during daylight, but the battery stores extra generation instead of sending all of it back to the grid. At around 4:30 p.m., the system usually switches from solar charging to household backup. I can see the battery state of charge in the app, and it normally carries us through the expensive peak period until about 9 p.m.
The biggest practical difference is my evening cooking routine. The oven, induction hob, lights, and heat-pump water heater now draw from stored solar energy. Before the battery, those hours were consistently the costliest part of my bill. My first full month showed roughly a 30 percent reduction, although weather and utility rates made the result vary. I am not claiming zero bills; winter clouds still matter.
I did have one minor scare. During a firmware update, the monitoring app reported the battery offline while the house was still running normally. A router restart did nothing, so I checked the communication cable and power cycled the gateway. The connection returned after about ten minutes, and the battery never stopped supplying backup power. That small incident taught me not to panic at an app warning before checking the actual inverter status.
I also like having backup power during short outages; refrigeration and Wi-Fi stay on without me dragging out extension cords. The system is not completely hands-off—I occasionally clean panels and watch battery capacity—but it has made solar self-consumption feel useful rather than theoretical on ordinary evenings too.
