2 years ago, I added a battery storage system to my rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. The heart of it is a 320ah lifepo4 16 battery bank connected to a 5kW hybrid inverter. I was nervous about the installation because my garage is already crowded, but the installer finished in one afternoon and left the wiring, fuses, and battery monitor neatly labeled.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges the highest rate. Before storage, the solar panels exported power during the day, then we bought electricity for cooking, laundry, lights, and the heat-pump water heater at peak prices. Now the battery charges from excess solar around midday and carries most of the evening load. On a typical summer day, I use roughly 8 to 10 kWh from the battery instead of the grid. My monthly bill has dropped by about $70 to $95, depending on weather and air-conditioning use.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 15% even though I had set a lower reserve. The monitoring app showed no fault, but the inverter had reverted to its backup reserve setting after a firmware update. I changed the setting, restarted the inverter, and everything worked normally. Since then, I have kept the reserve at 20% so there is still emergency power during an outage.
The practical benefit is not just the bill reduction. I notice fewer worries when clouds roll in, and our refrigerator, internet equipment, and a few lights stay powered during short outages. The LiFePO4 battery has been quiet, with no noticeable heat or maintenance. I still check the solar battery app once or twice a week, but otherwise it has become an ordinary part of home life. For me, using stored solar during peak hours has been the most worthwhile upgrade I have made to the system.
