Two summers ago, I added a home battery to our rooftop solar, mostly because our utility's time-of-use rates made evenings expensive. The panels already covered a lot of daytime use, but I hated watching the meter pull power from the grid right after sunset.

Our installer handled the battery and ats wiring in one day. I wasn't expecting to care about the app, but I check it more than I expected: solar charges the battery through the afternoon, and the house runs from stored energy during the dinner rush. On a normal sunny day we reach bedtime with plenty left, then the system switches back to grid power in the morning if needed.

The clearest difference is the bill, not some dramatic feeling of being off-grid. Before, we used to buy a chunk of electricity during the pricey evening window. Now our monthly usage charge is usually about $45 lower in spring and summer, though winter clouds and heating make the savings smaller. I still pay the fixed connection fee, so I don't pretend the battery makes electricity free. It just shifts the solar energy I would otherwise send out for a modest export credit into hours when power costs more.

My small learning curve was reserve settings. I initially set backup reserve too high, because I worried about outages. That left less capacity for everyday bill savings, and the battery sometimes hit its limit before bedtime. After lowering the reserve to 25 percent, it covered more evening use while keeping a useful emergency cushion. I changed it in the app in a minute; no service call or complicated reprogramming.

On cloudy days, I pay attention to the forecast and avoid running the dishwasher late, but otherwise it feels automatic. That quiet shift of evening demand feels practical to me.
