slimline

Last winter, I finally added a 10kWh solar battery to our rooftop PV system, mainly because our electricity bill was getting painful after sunset. The unit is a slimline model mounted in the garage, and its compact shape mattered; we have room to park bikes and reach the freezer.

Before storage, our panels exported plenty during the afternoon, then we bought power back during the expensive evening period. Now the battery charges from solar around midday and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the induction cooktop after 4pm. I leave the grid connected, but the energy management app shows little grid consumption between dinner and bedtime.

The savings are not spectacular every day, especially in winter, but they are visible. My evening usage has fallen from 7kWh purchased to about 2kWh. Our monthly bill dropped by $55–$75, depending on weather and tariffs. I changed the battery reserve to 20%, which gives us backup protection without sacrificing too much usable capacity. When the grid went down for 40 minutes during a storm, the switchover was automatic; the lights flickered once, but the router stayed online.

My hiccup happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped charging at 68% and the app displayed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway, checked the breaker, and waited ten minutes. The warning cleared, but I called the installer to confirm it was not a battery fault. They found a loose network plug at the inverter, fixed it, and the system has behaved since.

What I like most is that storage changes our routine. I run the dishwasher during sunny hours, then let the battery cover costly bits. It has not made us energy independent, but it has made our solar investment feel useful after dark, which was the point.
