Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar already covered much of the daytime load, but after dinner the house still pulled power from the grid for cooking, laundry, and our heat-pump water heater. The battery changed that pattern immediately.
On sunny days, it charges from surplus solar by mid-afternoon and starts discharging around 4 p.m., just before our utility’s peak rate begins. I set a 20% reserve, so it usually supplies the whole evening and leaves enough backup for a short outage. Looking at my monitoring app, the difference is easy to see: our average monthly bill fell from about $145 to $78 during the first full summer. That is not a perfect comparison, because weather varies, but the peak-hour savings are real. We are using roughly 6 to 8 kWh nightly from stored energy instead of buying it at the highest rate.
The one frustrating moment happened during the first week. The battery stopped charging at 82%, and the app showed a warning about temperature. I found the battery cabinet was sitting in a cramped utility closet with poor airflow. Moving it a few inches away from the wall and adding a small vent fan solved the issue. Since then, it has charged to 100% whenever conditions allow, without noticeable noise.
I did laugh when searching manuals and forums for “lifepo4 ladegerˆ,” because that strange phrase appeared in a saved note from my installer, but it eventually led me to useful LiFePO4 charger settings. I now check state of charge, solar production, and grid import each morning.
