Running our solar battery storage system changed our electricity routine. Before installation, rooftop panels produced power, but evenings remained expensive. I chose a 10kWh battery using grade a lifepo4 cells. The installer mounted it beside our utility room, indoors, neatly. Setup took one long afternoon, mostly configuring monitoring and backup. I wanted the refrigerator, internet, lights, and garage door protected. Those essentials now continue working whenever the grid briefly flickers.
My first surprise was how quiet the battery operates overnight. I hear only a faint hum when charging after lunch. The app shows solar generation, household load, and battery level. It displays import and export totals, making savings obvious daily. During sunny months, the battery reaches full charge before lunchtime. It stores excess solar energy instead of sending everything away. At five o'clock, our electricity demand rises as cooking begins. The battery supplies peak-hour demand until its reserve setting intervenes. I set a twenty-percent reserve, mainly for outages and peace-of-mind.
Previously, our utility bill averaged around two hundred dollars monthly. After adding storage, bills have hovered near eighty dollars instead. Results vary with weather, but peak-rate reduction feels substantial monthly. We use the clothes dryer after sunset without worrying much. One rainy week exposed a small setup issue with scheduling. The battery started charging from the grid sooner than expected. I found an incorrect time-of-use rate in the application settings. After correcting it, the system returned to normal promptly again. Customer support answered quickly, though the menu was initially confusing.
Since then, automatic energy management runs quietly without my attention. I occasionally check the app while drinking coffee each morning. Watching overnight consumption fall feels more satisfying than reading specifications. The battery has not eliminated grid purchases during winter storms. Still, it has made our solar investment useful and predictable.
