I installed my home battery last autumn, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. My 6.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate storage battery sits beside the inverter in the garage, charged by eight rooftop solar panels during the day. Before installation, the panels exported plenty of power at lunchtime, then I bought expensive grid electricity after dinner. Now the battery carries us from about 5 p.m. until bedtime.
The saving comes during peak hours. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, and our dishwasher, induction cooker, lights, and television run from stored solar energy instead of the grid. My electricity app shows the difference clearly: our evening consumption has fallen from roughly 8 kWh to 2 kWh on an average weekday. Our monthly bill is down by around 30 percent, although winter weather and changing utility rates make the saving vary.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. For several days, the battery stopped discharging at 80 percent. Nothing was broken; I had accidentally enabled a backup reserve setting while exploring the monitoring app. Once I changed the reserve to 20 percent, normal operation returned. That reserve gives me some comfort during outages, especially when the refrigerator is running.
I originally searched online using terms like home battery storage, solar battery backup, and even lifepo4 battery for ev, though I ended up choosing a household battery designed for stationary use rather than an electric vehicle battery. The chemistry is reassuring: lithium iron phosphate feels like a sensible choice for safety and cycle life.
The system has not eliminated my bill, but it has made our solar power more useful. I check the battery percentage almost as casually as the weather now. For me, the biggest win is simple: less wasted midday solar and fewer expensive evening grid purchases.
