Keeping the lights on after sunset used to feel like I was throwing money away. Before installing my solar battery, our evening electricity use came straight from the grid, especially during peak hours.
I chose a 10kWh lithium battery paired with rooftop solar and a Growatt hybrid inverter. I spent an embarrassing amount of time comparing the “5kw growatt inverter price” online, even though my installer ultimately recommended a different capacity for our home. The quote included battery installation, backup wiring, and monitoring, so I stopped comparing sticker prices alone.
The setup took most of a day. The crew mounted the inverter beside the electrical panel, labeled the circuits, and explained how the battery would reserve power for outages. I asked them to prioritize the refrigerator, internet router, lights, and garage door opener, rather than trying to keep every appliance running. That practical choice made the backup feel useful instead of oversized.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. On sunny days, solar charges the battery by late afternoon. When cooking starts and grid rates rise, the inverter quietly switches our house to stored energy. I can actually hear the dishwasher running without watching the utility meter climb.
My first full month with the battery cut the bill by about 35 percent, although weather and our habits obviously change that number. The best savings came during a hot week when the air conditioner ran hard; stored solar covered most evening cooling instead of expensive peak electricity.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one night because its reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 40 percent. I lowered it to 20 percent in the app, and normal operation returned the next evening. That small lesson taught me patience.
