Running our home on solar with a battery has changed how I think about electricity bills, mostly because I no longer watch the evening rate climb while the oven and dishwasher are going. Before storage, our panels sent plenty of midday power back to the grid, then we bought it back after sunset at the most expensive time. I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, and the change felt immediate in our routine. We still use the utility grid on cloudy stretches, but most evenings start with stored solar. I can run lights, cook, and put on a load of laundry without wondering whether we're using peak power. It isn't magic; I check the app a few times a week, but

the biggest difference shows up between about five and nine p.m., when our household is busiest. On the first full bill after installation, the total was about $48 lower than the same month the year before, though weather and habits aren't perfectly comparable. Since then, our monthly savings have usually landed around $35–$60, rather than a dramatic bill disappearing. We pay the battery off over time, so I don't pretend every saved dollar is pure profit. Still, shifting evening use to stored power makes the rates feel less punishing and gives me a predictable buffer against peak charges. That has mattered more than any flashy dashboard number.

One small snag came during a hot week: the battery seemed to stop discharging at dusk, and I assumed something had failed. The app showed backup reserve had been set higher than I realized, so there was less usable capacity for evening loads. I lowered the reserve slightly after checking the manual, keeping enough for outages but making more of the stored solar available each night. Since then, no repeat issue.
