I installed a 10 kWh lithium ion battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity in the evening. My solar panels usually produce more power than we need between late morning and mid-afternoon, so the battery charges during that window. After sunset, it supplies the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine.
The biggest difference showed up on my first full bill. Before adding energy storage, our evening usage pushed us into the utility’s peak-rate period almost every day. We were paying roughly $180 a month during the hotter months. After changing the battery settings to reserve power for peak hours, the bill dropped to about $115. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but saving around $60 each month feels worthwhile, especially because the system is using solar power that would otherwise have gone back to the grid for a small credit.
I spent more time comparing the lithium ion battery price than I expected. The cheapest option looked attractive, but its usable capacity and warranty were less generous. I ended up choosing a home battery with a longer warranty, a decent depth of discharge, and an app that shows solar generation, battery charging, and household consumption. The monitoring is genuinely useful; I can see when the dishwasher is causing a sudden load instead of guessing.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a firmware update, the app briefly showed the battery as offline even though the inverter lights looked normal. I waited about ten minutes, restarted the monitoring gateway, and the connection returned. The battery itself never stopped powering the house.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I do not have to remember to switch anything on at sunset. On cloudy days, the battery runs down earlier, but the reserve setting keeps some capacity available for an outage. For me, solar battery storage has been less about energy independence and more about making my existing solar investment work harder every day.
