I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during our evening peak. Before the battery, my rooftop solar routinely sent excess power back to the grid at lunchtime, then we bought it back after dinner. The installer mounted the inverter beside it and finished the wiring in one long afternoon. I expected dust and drilling, but the setup was surprisingly tidy. The app showed battery percentage, solar production, household load, and grid flow without much fiddling. My only complaint was that the Wi-Fi connection dropped twice during the first week.

Once we enabled time-of-use charging, the battery charged from solar until it reached 100 percent, then carried us through the expensive hours. On a typical weekday, my panels produce around 24 kWh, our home uses about 18, and the battery supplies five or six after sunset. That sounds modest, but it has changed my bill noticeably. Before storage, my utility bill averaged about $185 a month in summer. This year, even with similar air-conditioning use, the highest month was $119. The savings are not perfectly consistent because cloudy days still force grid purchases, but avoiding those 4-9 p.m. rates makes the difference.

I also learned that battery settings matter more than I expected. At first, my backup reserve was set to 30 percent, which meant the system stopped discharging early whenever rain was forecast. I lowered it to 20 percent after a few weeks, and now keep roughly 2 kWh available for outages. During one storm, the grid went down for about three hours. The refrigerator, internet router, and a few lights ran normally, although I switched off the office monitor.
