I installed a home solar battery system last spring. It was mainly meant to reduce our expensive evening grid use. Our rooftop panels already covered most daytime demand, but the utility charged almost twice as much after 4pm. The battery made a bigger difference than I expected.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium ion battery prismatic cells pack with a hybrid inverter. The installer finished the wiring in one day, though the permit took almost three weeks. They mounted the battery in my garage, leaving enough room around it for ventilation and service access. The monitoring app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption without much setup from me.
The most noticeable change is peak-hour savings. On sunny days, the panels charge the battery to 100 percent before dinner. We then run the dishwasher, heat pump, lights, and television from stored solar instead of pulling power from the grid. My monthly bill used to average about $180 in summer. After the battery was installed, similar months landed around $95 to $110, even though our usage habits did not change much. That feels more useful than a theoretical efficiency number because I can see it directly in the utility statement.
There was one small troubleshooting moment in December. The battery stopped discharging at 30% state of charge during a cold evening. I initially assumed something had failed, but the app showed a reserve setting had been enabled after a firmware update. I lowered the backup reserve to 15%, and discharge resumed immediately. That setting was useful during a brief outage later, when the battery kept our refrigerator, router, and a few lights running. I now leave the reserve at 20%, a compromise between bill savings, backup protection, and comfort during outages too.
