Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery storage system last spring because our electricity bill jumped whenever the air conditioner ran in late afternoon. My rooftop solar panels were producing plenty at noon, but most of that power was gone by dinner, exactly when our utility started charging peak rates.
That timing changed immediately after the battery was commissioned. The installer connected it to our inverter and set it to charge from solar first. Around 4 p.m., it stops sending surplus to the grid and begins covering the house load. By bedtime, it has usually supplied the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and part of our electric water heater. I wake up with the battery around 35–45%, then the panels refill it the next day.
The saving has been more noticeable than I expected. Before storage, our highest monthly bill was about $286. Since installation, comparable hot months have landed between $170 and $195. That is not a magic zero bill—the utility still charges connection fees, and cloudy stretches force us to buy electricity—but reducing peak-hour imports makes the difference. Our solar battery monitoring app also shows how much energy comes from the battery, which has helped me stop obsessively checking the meter.
I did have one hiccup. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled evening time. The app showed “standby” even though the charge level was 82%. I power-cycled the inverter, but that only fixed it temporarily. Support traced it to a time-zone setting and pushed a correction remotely. Since then, it has behaved normally.
When I researched replacement parts, I noticed how often sellers advertise themselves as a lithium battery charger maker, but I cared more about warranty response and service than the label. For me, reliable peak shaving matters far more than app graphics.
