I installed a solar battery system last spring after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening when the heat pump and kitchen appliances were running together. The heart of it is a lifepo4 48v 280ah eve battery bank, paired with a hybrid inverter and my existing rooftop solar panels.
My main goal was simple: use daytime solar production to charge the battery, then run the house from stored energy during expensive peak hours. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full by early afternoon. By dinner time, I can see the inverter drawing from storage instead of the grid. This has made the biggest practical difference.
Previously, my home used around 18–22 kWh from the grid on a typical summer day. Now it is closer to 7–10 kWh, depending on cloud cover and how much laundry I do. My utility bill dropped by roughly 35% over the first full month, not because the panels suddenly produce more, but because I stopped buying so much electricity at peak rates.
A small setup lesson was learning to stagger loads. I initially ran the dishwasher as soon as I got home, which pulled the battery down quickly. After checking the monitoring app, I shifted it to late morning while solar was still charging. That simple change improved my evening reserve noticeably. I now try to keep the state of charge above 25%, especially before a cloudy day.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the inverter showed a battery communication warning and refused to discharge. I powered down the inverter, checked the cable connections, and restarted everything after five minutes. The warning cleared, and the battery has behaved normally since then. I later learned that a loose communication plug was the likely cause.
Since then, it has become part of home life.
