Solution Solar Inverter
Running our solar battery for six months has changed the way I use electricity at home. Before installation, our evening power bill was the frustrating part of summer. We have rooftop solar, but once the sun dropped, the house pulled expensive grid power for cooking, laundry, and charging the car.
The installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter. Setup was less dramatic than I expected. They configured the energy storage system to keep a reserve for outages, then charge from solar during daylight and discharge after 4pm. I connected the monitoring app myself, although finding the exact battery settings took an evening and too much coffee.
The biggest practical difference is peak-hour savings. On a sunny weekday, the battery is usually full before lunch. After dinner, it runs our refrigerator, lights, television, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater without drawing from the grid. My utility statements show roughly 70% less evening consumption, and our monthly bill has fallen from about $180 to $70 in the brighter months. Winter is less impressive, but we still save because cloudy days often leave some solar charge.
I particularly like checking fronius web after work. The graph makes it obvious when the battery covered a high tariff period rather than merely promising savings in an advertisement. Once, I noticed the state of charge stuck at 22%. The app showed no fault, so I checked the battery isolator and found it had been switched off during garage cleaning. Turning it back on restored normal discharge that evening. It was a small reminder that solar monitoring is useful, but not completely automatic.
The battery has not made us energy independent, yet. We still buy grid power occasionally.
