Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar array already produced more power than we used during sunny afternoons, but without storage that surplus disappeared into the utility company’s credit system.
I set it to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when my time-of-use rate is highest. On a weekday, it runs the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and occasionally the induction cooktop. Watching the inverter app show battery power carrying the house through dinner feels satisfying. Before installation, our monthly bill averaged about $165 in summer. Since adding the battery, it has usually landed between $65 and $85, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. That is roughly $80 saved in a month, but I don’t count export credits as guaranteed savings.
The only hiccup came during a hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 72%, and the app displayed a communication warning. I checked the breaker, Wi-Fi, and battery disconnect. Everything looked normal. After restarting the inverter, the warning remained. I eventually found a loose communication plug in the cabinet. Reseating it restored the connection, and the system resumed discharge within a few minutes. That moment convinced me to label every cable and keep the installer’s number handy.
I also learned that the lifepo4 16s bms is not something I should casually adjust. Its cell-voltage balancing and temperature protections are doing important work, so I left the settings alone. For now, this battery gives me the biggest benefit after sunset: quieter grid dependence and a smaller electricity bill. I am considering adding another module next year, but I will wait until our summer usage proves the current setup is consistently cycling well. For my home, reliable daily savings matter more than chasing maximum battery capacity on paper.
