I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my home inverter last autumn, mainly because my electricity bill kept jumping during the evening peak. Our rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but the washing machine, cooking, heating, and hot-water boost all happened after sunset. The battery has made that timing problem much less frustrating. On a typical sunny day, it charges from around 10 a.m. until early afternoon, then supplies the house from about 4 p.m. through bedtime. I usually finish the night with 25 to 35 percent remaining, which gives me a comfortable buffer for the morning.
The clearest difference is the bill. Before storage, my monthly winter bill averaged about $240, with roughly $70 of that coming from evening consumption. After installing the battery, the same months have landed closer to $175, although weather and tariffs vary. I am not claiming the battery erased the bill; grid power still covers cloudy days and the battery cannot replace sensible energy use. Still, shifting those expensive hours to stored solar has saved me around $60 to $75 most months. I check the monitoring app occasionally, and seeing the battery discharge while the house is cooking dinner is surprisingly satisfying. It also means I no longer stare at the clock before turning on the dishwasher.
My only real hiccup came during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent even though it was still charging, and it briefly stopped accepting solar. I found the inverter had switched to a backup mode after a short grid outage. Restarting it and updating the firmware fixed everything. While checking the manual, I also searched for “lithium battery charger 16.8v australia,” but that turned out to be relevant to smaller battery packs, not my high-voltage home storage system anyway.
