Two months ago, I finally switched on my home solar battery system after getting tired of watching afternoon electricity rates climb. My setup is fairly modest: twelve rooftop panels, a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and a hybrid inverter. I live in a small house with one heat pump, so I was mainly looking for practical bill savings, not energy independence bragging rights.
The biggest difference has been peak-hour usage. Before storage, I would come home around 5:30 p.m., turn on the heat pump, dishwasher, and kitchen lights, and immediately start buying expensive grid power. Now the battery carries those loads until bedtime. On sunny days, it is usually full by early afternoon. I have set the inverter to reserve 20%, so it does not drain completely before morning.
My utility bills have dropped by roughly $55–$75 per month, depending on weather. That is more noticeable than I expected, especially during hot weeks when air conditioning used to run through the evening. I still pull some grid electricity on cloudy days, but the battery makes the expensive hours almost invisible.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me more than the installation manual did. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at 6:00 p.m. even though its display showed 68% charge. I restarted the inverter, checked the time-of-use schedule, and discovered the update had reset my timezone. Correcting it took five minutes, and normal operation returned immediately. I now glance at the monitoring app once a week instead of assuming everything is automatic.
I also use the battery as an "ats power source for server rack" during short outages, although my rack is really just a modem, router, and small home server.
