I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive electricity during our utility’s evening peak.
Since then, the biggest difference has been how ordinary our evenings feel. Before storage, our solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we sent much of that energy back to the grid for a small credit. Now the battery charges from solar during the day and runs our refrigerator, lights, router, and heat-pump water heater after dinner.
At first, I watched the app obsessively because I wanted to see whether the advertised time-of-use savings would show up in real life. On sunny days, it usually reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. By seven o'clock, the battery is often around sixty percent, and it carries us through the expensive window without pulling from the grid.
Our utility’s peak rate is nearly three times the overnight rate, so this shift matters more than the raw amount of solar generated. On cloudy days, the battery does not fully charge, but it still covers the most valuable hours. After two billing cycles, my bill was about thirty-five dollars lower than the same months last year, despite using more air-conditioning. I am careful calling that pure savings, since rates changed, but the pattern is clear.
A small troubleshooting moment also taught me something. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery at zero percent even though the panels were producing. I checked the breaker and found the battery had switched to backup reserve after a brief overnight outage. The installer had configured a twenty percent emergency reserve, but the app displayed it confusingly. A quick settings refresh fixed the display; the stored energy was still there.
I also learned not to chase maximum self-consumption every day. Keeping some capacity for an outage gives me more peace of mind than squeezing out one extra dollar. A “life battery cell” label matters less than dependable solar charging, clear settings, and practical daily battery backup for my home.
