2 winters ago, I added a 12v 200ah lithium iron phosphate battery to my small rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop sending cheap afternoon power back to the grid.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected: the electrician mounted a hybrid inverter in the garage, connected the battery, and walked me through the monitoring app. My first concern was noise, because our garage shares a wall with the kitchen. Fortunately, the inverter only hums briefly when charging hard, and I barely notice it from inside.
The bigger surprise has been the peak-hour savings. I programmed the system to charge from solar after breakfast and run the house from the battery between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Before storage, my electric meter climbed every evening when we cooked, ran the dishwasher, and used the heat pump. Now, most of that window comes from stored energy.
Our monthly bill fell from roughly $190 in summer to $115, although weather and utility rates change. The battery is not magic; it simply lets me use my own solar later. The part is seeing the app report a 70-80% discharge on days without me changing our routine. On cloudy days, I preserve a little capacity for evening essentials instead of forcing a full cycle.
I did have one troubleshooting moment in winter. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. I checked the settings, restarted the inverter, and discovered the time zone had reset. That five-minute fix restored operation, but it taught me not to assume a solar battery fault. I now check the event log before calling support.
After two years, the lithium iron phosphate battery still shows no capacity loss. I keep the room cool, avoid draining it completely, and let the battery management system handle balancing.
