Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2 a.m. is when I really started appreciating my solar battery. Before installing it, I watched the inverter shut down after sunset and bought power from the grid during expensive evening hours. My setup is modest: six rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery mounted in the garage. I was less interested in having backup power than in shifting my daytime solar into the peak period.
That shift has made the biggest difference to my bill. On sunny days, the panels fill the storage battery by early afternoon. I set the system to discharge from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., when cooking, running the heat pump, and charging devices would normally push us into higher rates. Instead, those loads mostly run from stored solar. My utility statement dropped by about 35 percent in the first full month, or roughly $48. Not every month is that good—cloudy weather and winter heating still hurt—but the saving is consistent enough to notice.
The one hiccup happened during a windy night. The battery stopped discharging at 6:20 p.m., and the app showed a vague “communication error.” I checked breakers first, then restarted the inverter, but nothing changed. After checking the cable between the battery and inverter, I found a slightly loose connector. Tightening it brought the system back within a minute. Since then I have added a monthly visual check and keep the battery area dry and unobstructed. I also learned that a solar battery is not a magic bill eraser; settings, weather, and household habits matter.
I considered a 12v 100ah rechargeable battery with charger for a small shed project, but my main home system is better suited to daily cycling. Overall, the quieter evenings and lower bills make the investment worthwhile for me.
