Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Five months ago I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter, and the surprise was how it changed evenings. Before that, my solar panels sent excess power back to the grid during the afternoon, then I bought electricity when cooking dinner and running the heat pump. Now the battery charges from solar around lunchtime and carries most of the house through the expensive hours.
I chose an lfpo4 48v battery after comparing several home energy storage options. The terminology looked strange at first, but the details mattered more to me: a usable capacity, a built-in battery management system, and a warranty I could understand. My installer mounted it in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set the backup reserve at 20%. That reserve has already been useful during two brief outages, keeping the refrigerator, router, and lights running without me touching anything.
The noticeable saving comes from peak-hour usage. My utility has a higher evening rate, so I used to see the meter climb after sunset. In the first month, my grid import during those hours fell from 11kWh per day to about 3kWh. My bill dropped by approximately $38, even though the weather was similar. It is not a dramatic “free electricity” result because I still pay a connection charge and buy power on cloudy days, but the difference is easy to see.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at 5:00 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of charge. I checked the inverter schedule and found the peak window had reset to midnight. Changing that setting restored operation the next evening. Since then I glance at the solar monitoring app daily, mostly to confirm the state of charge and temperature. For my home, this battery has made solar power far more useful after sunset.
