Solution Solar Battery
8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with my rooftop solar system. I chose a solar battery mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity, rather than chase complete energy independence. My installer mounted the battery in the garage. The setup took one day.
At night, the system automatically charges during daylight and switches to battery power around 4:30pm. That timing has been the biggest win. Before storage, my air conditioner, induction cooktop, and water heater all pulled from the grid during peak hours. Now the battery carries most of that load until bedtime. My average evening consumption is about 5kWh, so I finish with 40–50% remaining.
On sunny days, solar production refills it by early afternoon, and the next morning I still have enough reserve for short outages. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in summer to $72-90, depending on weather and how often we run the dryer. That is not a dramatic zero-bill result, but it feels meaningful because the battery is doing useful work every evening.
The only hiccup came after a firmware update. For two nights, the app showed “standby” even though the battery read 78%. I power-cycled the inverter as support suggested, checked the communication cable, and discovered the update had reset my time-of-use schedule. Restoring the peak window fixed it immediately. I now glance at the monitoring app once a week, rather than obsessing over every percentage.
One thing I learned is that a home solar battery is not the same as a portable power bank. I had previously researched an 18650 battery pack, but for household storage I preferred a professionally assembled lithium iron phosphate unit with a proper battery management system (BMS). Safety certifications, warranty support, and usable capacity mattered more to me than squeezing out the lowest upfront price.
